Addressing the Stigma — Educating Patients About Addiction Treatment Options

Many patients avoid or delay addiction treatment due to stigma. They may associate methadone or Suboxone clinics with shame, failure, or punishment. As a clinician, you have an opportunity to reframe the conversation—and help your patient take the first step toward care.

Shifting the Language

Replace moral language with medical language. For example:

Instead of: “You need to quit everything.”
Say: “There are treatments that can help you feel better, even if you’re not ready to quit entirely.”
Instead of: “You should go to rehab.”
Say: “There are walk-in clinics that offer support, medication, and healthcare without judgment—like Arrow Medical.”
Instead of: “You are an addict.”
Say: “You have an opioid use disorder.”
Instead of: “Clean” and “Dirty”
Say: “positive or negative for illicit substances” or “abstinent”
