Addressing the Stigma — Educating Patients About Addiction Treatment Options

Many patients avoid or delay addiction treatment due to stigma. They may associate methadone or Suboxone clinics with shame, failure, or punishment. As a clinician, you have an opportunity to reframe the conversation—and help your patient take the first step toward care.

Shifting the Language

Replace moral language with medical language. For example:

  • Instead of: “You need to quit everything.”
Say: “There are treatments that can help you feel better, even if you’re not ready to quit entirely.”
  • Instead of: “You should go to rehab.”
Say: “There are walk-in clinics that offer support, medication, and healthcare without judgment—like Arrow Medical.”
  • Instead of: “You are an addict.”
Say: “You have an opioid use disorder.”
  • Instead of: “Clean” and “Dirty”
Say: “positive or negative for illicit substances” or “abstinent”

Normalize Harm Reduction as Healthcare

Harm reduction is a clinically validated approach to addiction care. At Arrow Medical, we offer methadone and Suboxone programs, Kadian, monthly Sublocade injections, safe opioid supply (Dilaudid), and hepatitis C treatment. Patients can access all services without an appointment.

Tips for Patient Education

  • Use non-stigmatizing language like “substance use” instead of “abuse.”
  • Emphasize choice: “You can explore different options and find what works best.”
  • Highlight convenience: “Arrow Medical offers walk-in treatment and doesn’t require a referral.”

Compassionate, evidence-based care saves lives. At Arrow Medical, we provide addiction treatment that respects each person’s dignity, autonomy, and goals. Send your patients directly to any of our clinics, or call us to learn how we can support them.
